Self-Defense Programs for Women: Is Ninjutsu a Good Choice for Women's Self-Defense?

In terms of women's self-defense training for street altercations, most women have opted for a more situational self-defense training group option. This environment allows women to approach an aggressor in class the same way they would if the attack were real. This works where base skills are learned on a physical reaction level, drilling scenario after scenario to affect a reactionary response.

Can this type of training work? Maybe it will.

Do I think it has its flaws?

Definitely.

Now, this type of women's self-defense training may be popular but it can never take the place of proper strategic skill-building. Ninjutsu provides both woman and men with methods that work in the worst of environments, placing great importance on self-preservation with minimal damage. On top of this, our training places great emphasis on proper body movement, known as "ninpo-taijutsu" or "budo taijutsu" in Japanese, which allows women to generate a lot of stopping power in their strikes and kicks. By using the body the way it is designed to move, women can greatly increase overall self-defense skills, situational awareness, and reliability of the techniques and concepts studied.

The taijutsu in ninjutsu is unique. Its' methods are timeless and battle-tested under the worst of situations and during times of great war. Ninjutsu provides women with that strategic advantage over an attacker in several ways:

Muscle strength puts an average woman at a disadvantage physically.

Ninjutsu techniques are designed to be effective without using physical strength.

Ninjutsu was developed and utilized by Japanese warriors of small stature. Most warriors of the time were actually under 5 feet tall, had on heavy armor, and had to have techniques and strategies that would prevent them being killed. How does this translate to women's self-defense? It's simple. Ninjutsu is designed to eliminate the advantage of a bigger, stronger attacker. So, instead of women trying to go head-to-head with someone one-hundred pounds heavier, she can simply use her training to neutralize the attack regardless of the attributes of the attacker.

Finally, ninjutsu encompasses situational response training as well. However, how we go about it is much differently. Instead of drilling "techniques", we drill proper movement exercises, situational awareness training, power generation through proper taijutsu, and provides a complete system of self-protection and more importantly, preservation.
So, to answer the question, "Is ninjutsu a good choice for women's self-defense?" The answer is...

It is excellent for women!

Because it truly develops a woman's ability to defend herself in any type of dangerous situation to the highest of levels.

Effective self defense for women requires more than just a few "karate moves." It involves the ability to think strategically, and understand how to defend yourself with as little wear-and-tear on you as possible.
